Movie Sequels Fans Can Expect In the Next Few Years

Hollywood loves their sequels, and some of them are coming sooner than you think. Whether it's the upcoming release of Indiana Jones 5 or a comedy reunion for 23 Jump Street, these classic characters are guaranteed to stir up old memories. Which of these movies are you excited to see back on the big screen?

23 Jump Street

These two lackluster cops have just earned their third hit comedy: 23 Jump Street. Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum star as the unlikely buddy-cop duo who make their mark by going undercover. Their comedy chops and A+ writing are sure to make this one of the funniest flicks this summer. Following the success of 21 and 22 Jump Street, 23 is going to be a hoot!

Austin Powers 4

Who knew that a wacko spy comedy set in the 1960s would have such an impact? Apart from its crazy quotable lines, Austin Powers has strongly influenced pop culture for years. Finally, at long last, Austin Powers 4 might be ready to make an appearance. It's been in the works since 2005 but still needs a few years to get the details right. Expect this one soon, but there is no release date yet.

McClane

This Die Hard hero isn't done quite yet. Sure, he's already had a hand in saving the Nakatomi Corporation, Washington Dulles International Airport, New York City, the FBI, and all of Eastern Europe, but John McClane wants another crack at his movies. This franchise is a favorite for action fans, so a new Die Hard flick is like if Christmas came early. However, you'll have to wait until 2022.

Beetlejuice 2

Tim Burton is the master of scary movies for children, so it only makes sense that he be called in to bring Beetlejuice 2 to the theaters after all these years. Released in 1987, Beetlejuice was an instant success, cult classic, and even got the Broadway musical treatment. The original film won an Academy Award for the incredible effects, so given three decades, the next chapter should be pretty spooky!

Top Gun: Maverick

It's taken over 30 years for the next installment, but Paramount Pictures has finally decided to give the fans what they've always wanted: the next movie in the Top Gun franchise. Fans will return to the familiar USS Enterprise for more of the sky-high action that popularized the 1986 flick. Several A-listers have already signed on, but most importantly, both Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer are back!

Indiana Jones 5

A reboot? No way. Harrison Ford is the only Indiana Jones, and he's ready to grab his hat and whip for another go at this iconic action franchise. Ford has always spoken proudly about his role as the wise-cracking adventurous archeologist, so it's no surprise the star signed on for another chance to play him. Jones will be older, which Ford is excited about. He says "It’s interesting to see it in a different light."

Space Jam 2

Space Jam's success was perplexing but undeniable. Released in 1996, Space Jam has become a cult classic and nostalgia trip. Both of those together add up to a franchise goldmine. The initial release made around $6 billion (after combining sales from the movie, graphic novel, pinball game, video games, toys, and more). This fan-favorite is sure to be a slam dunk!

Pirates of the Caribbean 6

Sure, this is pretty standard practice for the Pirate of the Caribbean franchise, making a new movie out of nowhere. But haven't we been missing Captain Jack Sparrow? Well, the seafarer is not back on the open seas, but he sent a friend. Johnny Depp has opted out of this flick, and he's been replaced with a swashbuckling female pirate in his place. Keep your eyes on the box office for this one!

Gladiator 2

After winning an impressive five Academy Awards, it's no shocker that this movie is getting another go in the theaters. Gladiator was one of the biggest successes of the past twenty years, so it only made sense to try to flesh out the story a bit more. The plot focuses on a new character who goes by Lucius. He is the nephew of Commodus, who was killed in the first movie. Do you feel a revenge plot coming on?

Bill & Ted Face the Music

Bill and Ted are back for another excellent adventure. The slacker duo played by Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter reunite in an effort to create the ultimate song. The film has already been confirmed in pre-production and has scheduled their filming for the end of the year, so it won't be too long until we see the next chapter of their story. That is if they can write that song.

Coming 2 America

Prince Akeem came to America 30 years ago when Eddie Murphy portrayed him in Coming to America, and he's finally made his way back to the states. Prince Akeem discovers that he has a long lost son who has been living in the USA, so he returns to meet his heir. Most of the cast has agreed to make an appearance in the film, which is set for December 18, 2020.

Sherlock Holmes 3

Holmes and Watson are back in action! The weird and wonderful Sherlock Holmes has saved the city of London several times in literature, but only twice in the cinema. It's time to catch up. The third film follows the most-portrayed literary character, ever, as he uses his cleverness and wit to solve the toughest of crimes. How will he uncover this upcoming issue?

Triplets

These 80s twins were once separated at birth, but the duo are back together again and this time, there's a third brother! Who could ever join the ranks of Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny DeVito, you might be wondering. Well, the mystery third sibling will be portrayed by Eddie Murphy. The wheels are in motion for this one, but there is no official release date yet.

Murder on the Orient Express 2: Death on the Nile

Hercule Poirot, played by Kenneth Branagh, is back and ready to solve the crime. The famed detective will be solving the mystery explained in the Agatha Christie novel “Death on the Nile” but nothing is as it seems. Both Armie Hammer and Gal Gadot join the cast on the Nile River. The eagerly anticipated sequel release will hopefully be in October of 2020.

The Matrix 4

Remember when we first followed Morpheus down the rabbit hole? Well, the story isn't over just yet. It seems that the fourth Matrix film is not too far away. The sequel will be coming to cinemas in late May of 2021. That's not all either, apparently, some key cast members will be returning to this action thriller. That means superstars Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss are back as Neo and Trinity!

Avatar 2

Avatar was a massive success when it was first released, breaking box office records that held for several years. However, James Cameron always said his famous CGI movie wasn't done quite yet and that sequels would be coming soon. Well, the time has finally come. A steady stream of four more Avatar movies are said to be released over the course of the next decade starting in 2021.

Gremlins 3

Somehow, Gremlins was a hit with child audiences. No one really knew why, as the movie was deeply unsettling and slightly terrifying, but the number don't lie. After the second one earned just as much praise as the first, executives knew they'd have to sign on for a third. Though it does not yet have a release date, the script has been written and the pre-production is in the works.

Rush Hour 4

The unlikely duo is back and better than ever! Jackie Chan rides alongside Chris Tucker in this hilarious franchise. Set to release in August of 2020, these two are up for more spy hijinks that get them into a few sticky situations. There's been no word yet on what fans can expect from the comedy, but it's practically guaranteed to make them laugh!

Legally Blonde 3

Elle Woods has conquered Harvard Law School and the tricky world of politics, so what could possibly come next? Well, Reese Witherspoon is back to find out. Though originally scheduled for Valentine's Day 2020, the movie had some production issues and has been pushed back. There's no word yet on when fans can expect it, but rest assured it will be pretty in pink!

Bond 25

You read that right, this will be the 25th in the Bond movie franchise. Daniel Craig is returning for the ever-changing role, and Mr. Robot star Rami Malek has signed on to play the supervillain. After several scheduling conflicts, the film finally announced that it would be released on November 25, 2020. The plot takes a look at climate change, making it very timely...

Joker 2

This one was definitely expected. The Joker movie grossed around one billion dollars, so why wouldn't they be making a follow-up? Though Hollywood is keeping things quiet for now, it has been confirmed by returning director and writer Todd Phillips. Not surprisingly, Joaquin Phoenix is back for the dysfunctional titular protagonist role.

John Wick 4

Just call Keanu the king of sequels, because he's in another one! John Wick 3 ended on a treacherous cliffhanger. Both the Tick-Tock Man and the Bowery King help Wick escape after he survives an insane fall, but what happens next? Well, on May 27, 2022, you can find out how this action hero gets his revenge on Winston, the High Table, and the Adjudicator.

Knives Out 2

Who doesn't love a good mystery? After successfully fooling millions of viewers across the globe, Rian Johnson is not finished with his franchise yet. Bringing back sneaky detective Benoit Blanc for the first follow-up of Knives Out, Rian could not be more excited for the chance. Lionsgate is behind this incredible project with even more incredible accents.

Fast and Furious 9

You might be living your life a quarter-mile at a time, but this movie is way ahead. The next sequel in the Fast and the Furious franchise is already being filmed...and so is the one after it! Both 9 and 10 are being made. The ninth installment was pushed back until April 2, 2021, after experiencing some minor delays with production. The tenth should be right behind it!

Now You See Me 3

Magic is in the air and on the screen. These magicians were once abandoned by Lionsgate, but they're officially back for the third Now You See Me film. Jessie Eisenberg and Woody Harrelson are making a return, but audiences will also meet some new faces. Screenplay writer Eric Warren Singer has already agreed to the project.

Godzilla vs. Kong

Who didn't see this one coming? Godzilla is an almighty ancient super-monster that looks just like a giant lizard. The creature was rebooted 2014 and wrecked havoc on townspeaople once again. Kong is a giant, all powerful ape that once terroized New York City. Together, they could only be destructive. Who will win? Watch the battle once it is released on November 20th in 2020.

Passion of the Christ: Resurrection

Say a prayer because Mel Gibson’s film The Passion Of The Christ is back for round 2 in the box office. It is remembered as one of the most financially successful independent movies ever created. Braveheart writer Randall Wallace has been signed on to craft the script with actor Jim Caviezel reprising his role as Jesus Christ. Expect the miracle in 2021.

Wonder Woman 1984

Gal Gadot is picking up the infamous red shield once again. Though it's technically not a sequel, it certainly ticks all the same boxes as one. Set in a new time with a new plot, this Wonder Woman will be wonderful. Diana Prince and Steve Taylor (played by Chris Evans) will both return for their roles in very modern society. Expect the action on August 14th, 2020.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them 3

Newt Scamander is back for some more globetrotting escapades in this installment of the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them flick. Though the film has yet to be actually titled, it is definitely in the works. The mystical and magical Wizarding World of Harry Potter has a few more of these prequels in store for fans. Expect this one to be ready sometime in the fall of 2021.

A Quiet Place 2

Comedian turned thriller star John Krasinski is back in the Quiet Place again! Coming to cinemas on September 4, 2020 co-writer Scott Beck has stated that the upcoming sequel will answer some missing pieces from the film. However, no one has revealed if this movie will follow the original characters or a new collection. Either way, it'll be certainly scary!

Peter Rabbit 2

On January 15, 2021, Beatrix Potter’s stories of Peter Rabbit are returning to the big screen. They definitely make for cute, family-friendly films, so director Will Gluck was eager to get back on board. The second release of the bunny adventures will follow the famous rabbit Peter and his adorably fluffy family on their trip to London. What could possibly go wrong?

District 10

Remember District 9? Well, get ready for District 10! The exciting sequel to this action thriller is coming to the silver screen in the next few years. The original debuted back in 2009, so fans have certainly waited a long time for this next chapter. Writer and director Neill Blomkamp confirmed that the movie is definitely going to be created, so just wait a little while longer!

Jumanji 4

Somehow, this group has gotten stuck in the game of life or death once again! The cast returns, including Dwayne Johnson, Karen Gillan, Kevin Hart, and Jack Black, to save the world yet again. This fourth installment will most likely resume the previous course of events from The Next Level. Expect the same magical whimsy perfected by director Jake Kasdan. However, it might be a while until you see it on the big screen.

Guardians of the Galaxy 3

Despite being initially removed from the third of this superhero story, writer and director James Gunn has been brought back on to the scene. Of course, he's a little preoccupied since he is also working on the Suicide Squad sequel that's been rumored. Fans of Guardians of the Galaxy can expect the next chapter in 2023, most likely. However, no official date or even year has yet been announced.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife

Who you gonna call? Well, in this small town, there is no one to call! Taking a step back from the traditional plot of this superhit, Ghostbusters: Afterlife adds Paul Rudd to the cast and puts some children in the driver's seat (literally). Coming to theaters in March of 2021, the Afterlife also stars rising celebrity Finn Wolfhard.

Doctor Strange 2

There's never a lack of superhero flicks in the works, so it only makes sense that Doctor Strange got the sequel treatment that most Marvel movies get. Benedict Cumberbatch reprises his role as the titular character in Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness, which is said to be released on May 7th of 2021. Scott Derrickson will not be returning to direct the second movie, so this could go a variety of ways. Nevertheless, shooting is already underway.

Detective Pikachu 2

Who didn't see this coming? Even before the first film proved to be such a smash hit, this sequel was in the works. After having previously written the 22 Jump Street script, writer Oren Uziel has signed on to craft the next exciting DP screenplay. Ryan Reynolds returns for the second film, as does director Rob Letterman. Pika pika!

Den Of Thieves 2

The first Den Of Thieves film swept through the box office with ease, all thanks to the acting chops of Gerard Butler. He leads a den of thieves (shocker!) through a cinematic piece that is reminiscent of films like Heat. The second in the franchise is subtitled Pantera, whatever that means. Christian Gudagast joins again as the writer and director, and O’Shea Jackson returns with 50 Cent. The film will be released in 2021.

Demolition Man 2

Okay, this one kind of came out of nowhere. Sylvester Stallone announced on Instagram that, seemingly out of nowhere, this 1993 classic was getting a second installment. Coming in May of 2020, Demolition Man 2 was finally on the table for future filming. Warner Bros agreed to develop the project, but there's still a lot of unknown. Still, pretty cool!

Deadpool 3

Oh Deadpool, what would this world be without those witty quips? Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick have crafted a cunning script for the third Deadpool movie, this time made under Disney. It will be (probably) separated from the iconic Marvel cinematic universe, and Ryan Reynolds will be back as the titular hero. It will also be R-rated as well. Though there's not yet been any word on release dates, know it's coming soon!

Creed III

Creed is back in the ring with a fighter's vengeance. This time though, Michael B Jordan’s won't just be in the film, but also behind the scenes. He's been offered a director's position for his award-winning series. After the immense success of the second film, he jumped at the opportunity. However, actor Sylvester Stallone will not be returning for the third flick. He's busy with another Rocky movie, the seventh one!

Clerks 3

The duo is back in the View Askewniverse. After news of a Jay & Silent Bob Reboot, Kevin Smith will refocus his work life on the trilogy closer known as Clerks III.  Everyone is back for this flick, including Smith as writer and director, as well as the cast from the prior films. Some things got mixed up in the creation of the Jay and Silent Bob reboot, so Clerks must be recreated from scratch.

Chicken Run 2

Who doesn't want to see some animated clay chickens? Chicken Run returns to the big screen in this Aardman Animation series. This studio is creating a sequel to what is known as their most commercially successful film. Sam Fell, who directed the animated movie Flushed Away, has signed on to direct the movie. The official release is not yet known, but expect it sometime in 2021.

Captain Marvel 2

Brie Larson was made for the limelight, so it's no wonder she's back in her Captain Marvel suit once again. This sequel to the 2019 movie is aligned with the Marvel cinematic universe. Though the production has been kept tightly under wraps, sources have confirmed that this movie is definitely happening. Everything else is still pretty discreet though, so no release date yet.

Brightburn 2

You can never have enough horror flicks, and this horror is back on the big screen...maybe. The writer and producer of the first film have been tossing around the idea of a sequel to this superhero nightmare. Directed by David Yarovesky, discussions have been made about possible next steps. David is involved in other projects currently, but down the line, anything is possible! You might wait for this one.

Bright 2

Despite poor reviews, this Netflix movie starring Will Smith is getting a sequel. People love a lackluster film! Suicide Squad director David Ayer did the first film which was written by screenwriter Max Landis. Evan Spiliotopoulos and T. S. Nowlin have signed on the script the second one though, and Landis has been replaced. Will Smith is also said to come back, but no word yet about who is directing.

The Boss Baby 2

The Boss Baby is back. DreamWorks, which is now owned by Universal, has been moving forward with creating sequels to it's biggest hits, and Boss Baby was quite a hit. The Boss Baby 2 sees Alec Baldwin back in the high-chair as the voice of the child. The same director has also signed on to the project. The film is expected to be released in  March of 2021.

The Book Club 2

Your favorite book club ladies are back for another novel! Actresses Jane Fonda, Mary Steenburgen, Diane Keaton, and Candice Bergen are set to reprise their roles from the 2018 hit, The Book Club in a special and exciting sequel. Erin Simms wrote the first screenplay, and the movie was directed by Bill Holderman. Other than confirmation, not much is known about the details.

Black Panther II

Black Panther was one of the best selling superhero movies in years, so it's no surprise that studios were eager to jump on a sequel. Black Panther II was announced with Ryan Coogler back in the director's chair. Chadwick Boseman is also reprising his leading man role. The plot is still under wraps, but expect it on the big screen come May 6th, 2022.

Beverly Hills Cop 4

Paramount knows good business, which is why they have agreed to join up with Netflix to create Beverly Hills Cop 4, a long-awaited sequel. Axel Foley, played by Eddie Murphy, will hit the small screen for what is probably the last of the series. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer returns to the set, and fans can enjoy the nostalgic classic exclusively on the Netflix streaming service.

The Batman

Batman is always up for another movie, and this time, Robert Pattinson is taking on the titular character. Matt Reeves, the director from the last two Planet Of The Apes movies, is spearheading the movie. Early viewers say this film is going to be amazing. The release date is still not yet disclosed, but fans have faith that this could be one of the best Batman movies yet.

Bad Boys 4

Bad Boys For Life came out to widespread success last January, so why not keep the profits rolling? Sony has already started moving forward with the next piece of the Bad Boys story. The co-writer of the third flick, Chris Bremner, has returned to write the next script for the sequel. Martin Lawrence and Will Smith both return to their roles as well, and old favorite Jerry Bruckheimer returns to producing.

After We Collided

The steamy teen drama based on a One Direction fan fiction is returning to the big screen following the 2020 film. Josephine Langford returns as protagonist Tessa and Hero Fiennes Tiffin returns as broody love interest Hardin. This time, former Disney star Dylan Sprouse also joins the cast. The book series boasts 5 complete stories, so expect more sequels after this.

The Babysitter 2

Sometimes movies are so bad that they're good. This is one of those. The Babysitter received mixed reviews but nevertheless is back with its all-star cast. Bell Thorne is the biggest name on this cast list, but others include Judah Lewis, Hana Mae Lee, Robbie Amell, Andrew "King Bach" Bachelor, Emily Alyn Lind, Leslie Bibb, and Ken Marino. It comes to Netflix in 2020.

Atomic Blonde 2

Hold on to your seats, Charlize Theron is back for her leading role. The action hit Atomic Blonde from 2017 was in talks for a sequel almost immediately after release. Also returning is former director David Leitch. The director revealed that the film has been in talks since the first, but might not head to theaters and just go straight to streaming in 2020.

Ant-Man 3

Who doesn't love Paul Rudd? Ant-Man is far from the most popular of the Marvel heroes, but he's not one to be scoffed at, obviously. The fans of this man should be thrilled that the third one has already joined up with Evangeline Lilly and Michael Douglas again. Filming should be over by the end of 2020 and expected to be released sometime in 2022.

American Pie: Girls Rule

Say goodbye to the old American Pie, because this new one is just around the corner. This isn't so much a sequel as it is a spin-off of American Pie films. This is a modern adaptation of the franchise that swept the teen nation and will end up going right to streaming. Girls Rule boasts Mike Elliott as director, as well as a whole new cast. Stream it sometime in 2020.

Aquaman 2

This unexpected hit is highly expecting a sequel. After successfully earning $1 billion in the worldwide box office, an Aquaman sequel was obvious. Powerhouse actor Jason Momoa returns to be the hero of the sea, and director James Wan returns to steer the ship. Former screenplay writer David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick also returns to write the script, but no release date is yet public.

The Accountant 2

Broody and moody Ben Affleck reprises his role in this once-forgotten project. The Hollywood star confirmed the movie back in March of 2019, stating that a sequel to the modest hit The Accountant was still somewhere in development. Gavin O’Connor is the former Accountant director, and if this thing ever pulls through, he will likely return for the second.

Shazam 2

Did anyone get some bubblegum? Zachary Levi is off the ground once again as he returns to play the goofy superhero Shazam. Appropriately, the silly comic book hero sequel is set to be released on April 1st of 2022. There's not a lot of plot or other returning actors, but fans hope for some familiar faces.  Filming was slightly delayed, as it was set to begin shooting in the summer of 2020.

Mad Max 5

Mad Max: Fury Road was a milestone for cinema, so it makes sense that a sequel is coming in. Legal disputes are to blame for the delay, but things have been worked out so the movie is back on!  Currently, some sources have said that the next installment isn't a sequel but a prequel, explaining the origins of the character of Furiousa. Anya Taylor Joy has been rumored to play the part.

Jurassic World 3

The dinosaurs are back...again! Director Colin Trevorrow is back for the dinosaur franchise's 3rd action-adventure. First film actors like Sam Neill, Jeff Goldblum, and Laura Dern are joining at long last, joining modern stars Bryce Dallas Howard and Chris Pratt. It can be expected in 2021 and will pick up right where the last movie left off.

Hobbs and Shaw 2

Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham rejoin the cast for this Fast & Furious spin-off sequel. The duo became an instant favorite, so after the success of the first picture, a sequel was inevitable. The picture wasn't announced until March of 2020, so fans will have to wait to see the next installment. Right now, they still need a writer and director!

The Addams Family 2

Anyone else feeling kind of spooky? The animated blockbuster based on the nostalgic hit became a worldwide success. After it's US release, it was only a few days before a sequel was decided. Given an October 2021 release date, the entire former voice cast is expected to make a second round. No word yet on if former director Conrad Vernon (famous for movies like Sausage Party) will return for the flick.
