The Biggest Movie Plot Holes In Cinematic History

Have you ever noticed a plotline in a movie that just didn't quite make sense? Even the famous, ground-breaking films of Hollywood have pretty ridiculous plot holes that people seem to ignore just because the rest of the movie is good. Well, not today!

Here are some of the most obvious plot holes and things that just didn't add up in some blockbuster movies...

Grease

Musical comedies are rarely based on reality, but Grease was pretty close to it! True, the fact that total strangers would stop and dance with each other was a bit odd, but the love story between the two main characters was believable enough.

However, the end of the movie takes a totally different twist. As the two characters are about to drive off into the distance, the car actually ends up flying away. Yeah, that's a bit ridiculous.

Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory

Gene Wilder's rendition of Willy Wonka was a bit off and weird, but what was anybody expecting? The film has its fair share of surreal moments where you find yourself asking, "What is going on?" Yet, this particular scene drives people mad.

This scene is pretty much just the tourists watching Wonka as he sings, screams, and shouts like a madman. Honestly, it seems like this scene was specifically to show the viewer that Wonka was absolutely losing his mind. Why else would the image of a headless chicken show up?

Cats

There is, quite literally, not one thing about this movie that makes sense. The cats, played by insanely famous actors and celebrities, don't really know what's going on either, apparently. Instead of picking out just one scene from this movie, it's safe to say that every part of this movie makes no sense.

There’s the scene when the roosters with human faces getting eaten, which is literally just a fever dream in itself. There's also the scene where a cat removes her fur/skin/body simulates undressing, only to reveal. Not much happened, because it literally just reveals the same exact fur she already had. Don't forget the scene with Taylor Swift shoving catnip into a crowd!

Man of Steel

This was a difficult scene to watch just because it's emotional... But also, could have been totally avoidable. Superman was strong enough to be faster than the speed of sound, but could not save his adoptive father from being swept up into a tornado. Huh?

They obviously had a nice relationship, and his adoptive father was a selfless guy (after all, he died because he wanted to save the family dog from the truck). But still, Clark Kent could have absolutely went and saved his father from the tornado without being seen. He's Superman, after all!

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice

This movie is such a fever dream, most superfans choose to not remember it. In this particularly weird scene, Batman and Superman are dueling it out. Just as Batman is about to deal the final blow, Superman comes out with a plot twist.

As Superman is basically dying, he says the word, "Martha." He was calling out for his mother, which, here's the plot twist... that's also Batman's mother's name! How lucky, because that causes Batman to spiral into thinking about his mother which helped Superman get out of his deadly grasp. Sure, that would totally happen. Needless to say, fans weren't pleased with this easy escape.

Dolittle

Dolittle was not a high point for the infamous Robert Downey Jr. Most would consider it a flop for the Iron Man legend. It's also gotten some pretty bad reviews, especially for its rather dull ending.

After the final battle and climax of the film, Dolittle diagnoses a dragon as being constipated. With no other choice, he has to plunge his arm into the dragon’s butt and pulls out a range of objects, from human remains to a set of bagpipes. The dragon then farts right into his face. Was that necessary? No. Did it make sense? No.

Spider-Man 3

It's safe to say that the Spider-Man films got worse as they went on. It seems like the writers and director must have run out of story to tell because they forced this god-awful scene with Peter Parker in a jazz club. It made absolutely no sense and only wasted the viewers' time.

In this scene, Peter Parker becomes emo. Nobody is sure why. He's also at a jazz club. At this jazz club, he decides to improvise a dance routine. He then goes onto the piano and plays for the club. There's literally no reason for this scene to exist. It just makes people cringe!

Transformers: Age of Extinction

There's a reason why no one talks about this Transformers movie... It's because of the weirdly forced story plot point of the "Romeo & Juliet" law. Michael Bay makes sure to explain to us why his 20-year-old character is not doing anything illegal by sleeping with a minor. Why even make that a plot point, Michael Bay?

The scene details the law in Texas called the Romeo & Juliet law. The character specifically says the number of the law to make sure that the fans can see this for themselves. This law makes their relationship legal because they started dating while they were both still in high school. This was just weird and tasteless.

Captain America: Winter Soldier

Nick Fury is a rough and tumble character in this Captain America movie. The main characters were doing everything in their power to make sure he doesn't escape, and somehow, he does... It literally makes no sense.

Fury managed to escape by digging a tunnel. Fans agree that The Winter Soldier could easily have gotten into the tunnel to chase and catch Nick Fury, but he didn't. Fury was even badly injured, and somehow, he escaped. This was a sad plotline used as a ploy to continue the story.

Toy Story

Buzz Lightyear has a sad and confusing plotline. The toy doesn't realize he's a toy, but still acts like a toy. Buzz claims that he's a superhero sent from space and is definitely not a toy... Yet, this happens.

The toys from Toy Story never reveal to humans that they are real if they can help it. Whenever a human walks into the room, the toys play dead. For some reason, Buzz does the same thing, despite him being so positive that he's not a toy. What?

Jurassic Park

When the viewers and characters are first introduced to the ever-terrifying T-Rex, they could hear it a mile away. Naturally, it only makes sense that the gigantic dinosaur would make the ground rumble as it approaches. But then, for the sake of the story, the directors completely change that up.

Somehow, the extremely loud and Earthquake inducing T-Rex is super quiet. So quiet, in fact, that it can sneak up behind the protagonists. That makes no sense!

Independence Day

Computer software coding is literally a different language. They simply don't translate to one another if they are different. Independence Day said screw that, we're going to create a virus on our human software that can infect alien software.

This was a major plot point in the film, but in reality, that solution would never even be considered. Obviously, the director wasn't too concerned about whether or not alien firmware is compatible with human firmware, which is fine.

Twilight

Twilight follows a group of vampires and one human fangirl. These vampires have powers that make them some of the most powerful beings in the world. So, what do they do with their powers? Play baseball.

In hindsight, this scene does introduce the viewers to the main antagonists, but a lot of fans felt like baseball was a bit weird for powerful vampires to spend their time doing. Shouldn't they be taking over the world?

The Shining

The Shining is a deep movie filled with mise-en-scene imagery. It can be pretty weird at times, but that's what makes it so good! There is one scene that stands out to most viewers, though, that just feels completely out there and unrelated to the story.

For some reason, Wendy Torrence walks in on a person in a bear suit and a man dressed in fancy clothes getting into something personal. No one can really pinpoint what the meaning of this scene is, other than the fact that the Overlook Hotel is a weird and scary place.

Batman & Robin

Don't worry, this film is not the work of Christopher Nolan. Batman & Robin was done by Joel Schumacher and is for sure not a fan favorite. For some reason, he gives Batman a "GothCard" so he can always have his funds on him. Okay, sure.

Mac and Me

Did you know that McDonald's has a movie? This film is basically an ET ripoff featuring an alien who loves McDonald's. Even though this movie is totally weird in every facet, the scene where they are actually inside of the McDonald's is super bizarre. Everyone starts dancing for no reason, even Mac the alien!

2001: A Space Odyssey

Superman III

Clark Kent vs Superman, anyone? This scene is full is bizarre moments, especially when the two men fight each other. The viewer is left wondering whether or not there's an imposter, or we've entered a different dimension. Either way, it made no sense and left the audience with more questions than answers.

Cinderella

So, if Cinderella's ball gown and horse and carriage were magically whisked away at the stroke of midnight, wouldn't her shoe be dissolved, too? How did it survive? Everything that she wore was magic, including the shoe, so how did the prince go and find it? It's a mystery! (Or just a poor plot hole.)

Sixteen Candles

This is a sweet coming of age film directed by teen flick master John Hughes. Obviously, teens are who dying for love stories won't notice this weird plot hole, but a lot of adults did! When Jake goes to surprise Sam at the church, how did he know which one she would be at? Is this the end-all-be-all church of this small 80s town? Did he go to a bunch of other churches first before finding her? We need to know his process!

Star Wars Episode III: Revenge Of The Sith

Mace Windu was one of the most powerful Jedi in the entire galaxy. Even then, it wasn't very smart of him to go face the chancellor by himself. He could have gotten a bunch of different Jedi to help bring the evil villain down, but instead, he went by himself and immediately got wrecked. Seems pretty avoidable!

Mean Girls

Cady Heron was the new girl in school. Yes, she weirdly melded with the plastics, but this plot hole still doesn't make sense: How would she be responsible for the burn book if she just moved there? There was a lot of old tea in that thing that Cady wouldn't have known. She would have at least needed some help!

Titanic

The scene between Jack and Rose after the Titanic sank is still a hotly debated topic. Just from the one angle we got, it seemed like Rose could have moved over to bring Jack on board with her. There were also tons of other pieces of wood he could have hopped onto... Either way, Jack didn't have to die!

Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise Of Skywalker

Honestly, Palpatine's entire character is just confusing. They try to quickly explain his rise to evil by saying, "The dark side of the Force is a pathway to many abilities some consider to be unnatural." Okay, but how did he harness it that much? Is it really all about power from within? It just seems like there's something missing here...

Fight Club

This movie is very well done on so many levels (which is why it's such a cult classic) but there's one big hole in the story. When Tyler Durden shoots himself, he lines the gun up with his cheek. When the gun goes off, it goes out the back of his head. Is this some sort of plot device, or did they just mess up the shots while shooting?

The Sixth Sense

On the surface, The Sixth Sense is a great movie. It's only when you dig a little deeper that makes things confusing. For example, how does Malcome not know that he's dead? He didn't care that people just ignored his existence?

The Lion King

The folks in the kingdom really seem to trust Scar's word, because nobody fought him when he said that he "accidentally" killed his brother. But then, Simba reveals that Scar did kill Mufasa, and everyone is quick to believe that as well! It's all just a bit too easy to have your word trusted in this universe.

Ocean's 8

It seems like it was a little too easy for Debbie Ocean to be let out back into the world. After all, she was a world-class criminal. How was she let go without even a parole officer? Do the directors mean to say that no one is keeping tabs on the heist master? Sure, okay.

Back to the Future

Marty McFly went back in time and met his parents when they were in high school... So, why don't they recognize him as that "weird" kid from that one night? It would only make sense that they feel some sort of deja-vu while looking into the boy's eyes. Some fans speculate that they do recognize him, but it's a stretch.

The Wizard of Oz

The Wicked Witch dies after a pale of water is thrown onto her... It seems a little crazy that it was that easy to kill one of the most powerful evil villains in the land of Oz. Did it ever rain in Oz? Was she always at risk of being totally smoked?

Avengers Endgame

Avengers Endgame has a lot of plot twists and devices used to capture audiences, but this one plot point, in particular, has fans questioning what's going on. When Steve Rogers goes back in time and returns the stones, he stays with Peggy. In doing that, he changes history and creates a different timeline. If he's in a new reality, how did he make it back to the old one?

Iron Man 3

Robert Downey Jr. is Tony Stark who is Iron Man. He plays the role so well it's hard to decipher the character to the actor! Fans were pretty heartbroken to see that Iron Man retires at the end of the film... but then, in Age of Ultron, he's magically returned. Is it because Hollywood is greedy and wanted to continue to use Iron Man for movies?

Suicide Squad

One of the biggest plot points in the downer of a movie that is Suicide Squad is that Angela Wallace sends out her forces to extract a secret operative... That secret operative is Angela! When they figure it out, she shoots her entire staff. Seems like a lot of work for no reason, right?

Avengers

Bruce Banner has always said that he's always angry, which is how he knows how to stay calm. But then, he has to get angry to become the Hulk. So, is he always angry, or not? Wouldn't he just constantly be transforming into Hulk if that was the case?

The Dark Knight Rises

Fans were all over the ending scene of this movie. How did Bruce know where Alfred would be? Was he just a figment of Alfred's imagination? Why is Selina Kyle there? All of these questions... unanswered!

Edward Scissorhands

Edward Scissorhands used his curse for some good: to make beautiful ice sculptures! The weird thing is, he was just a local rumor for years. No one really knew if he existed up there. So, how did he get all of this ice? Someone surely knew he was up there because they were delivering tons of ice!

Batman Begins

In Batman Begins, the audience releases that Ra's microwave emitter is in full force when water pipes start bursting and sewer covers are exploding... Anything that contains water is totally blown up out of whack. If that were true, then shouldn't humans be bursting left and right? After all, the human body is 75% water!

Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back

Han and Leia make their way through an asteroid belt while Luke spends his time with Yoda training. The timelines of the two events simply don't match up. Did they just take a super long time to get through a relatively simple asteroid belt, or is Yoda just super fast with his training?

Transformers

In the film, Sam puts a pair of glasses up on eBay. He had no idea that these were the same glasses that the Decepticons are looking for. We later learn that the Decepticons know how to hack the US military network, so couldn't they have just hacked the bid? Maybe eBay didn't want to promote hacking on their site...

The Lost World: Jurassic Park

In the film, the T-rex's boat crashed into the harbor. It then escaped and quickly killed everyone on board. Truthfully, this was too easy. There's no way a giant dino like that one could have killed so many people with ease in such a tricky situation!

Terminator 2: Judgement Day

Anyone who has watched the film knows that Arnie arrives naked in the first movie. Kyle Reese explains to Sarah that only living organisms can travel through the time machines, but they have to be nude. That includes machines covered in living tissue. But, the T-1000 is obviously totally liquid metal, so how did it go through the time machine?

Star Trek

For someone who really wants revenge, Nero seems pretty content with just laying around for 25 years just waiting for the "right" moment to strike. Did anyone tell him that might not be a good idea?

Aliens

After the first big fight, the aliens have to crawl through the ventilation shafts to infiltrate the colonoy HQ. Can't they just bash the doors down? Wouldn't that be quicker, anyway?

E.T.

It's pretty convenient that ET and Elliott can fly across the sky to evade ET's capture, so why didn't they do that sooner? They really needed that at the beginning with the government agents hot on their tail. Kind of weird how they only used this device once.

Godzilla

It would have been a good idea to barricade Godzilla so it couldn't escape. For some reason, no one thought of that. So, the authorities have the arena with the baby Godzilla eggs inside surrounded, but Godzilla totally disappears. It kind of defeats the purpose, right?

Thor

At the end of Thor, the Bifrost is totally destroyed. There's no way to get out of Asgard, which makes Thor upset because then he can't get back to Jane. In the film after, he rejoins The Avengers gang like it's no big deal. If the entire point of the ending was to showcase how Thor was trapped on Asgard, why is he magically back with them?

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

Harry and Hermione use the time turner to save Harry. Now that Harry knows about the magical existence of the artifact, why wouldn't he just use it to go back and stop Voldemort from murdering his parents? Wouldn't that just be the easy solution?

The Dark Knight

The Joker got thrown in jail so he could mastermind a distraction where Batman and Commissioner Gordon race around time. He did all of this just so he could break out of jail when no one was looking and kill the mobster who was getting in his way. Couldn't he have just done that without putting everyone else all over the place?

The Matrix

In order to enter the Matrix, an operator has to be on hand to put them on, keep an eye on them, and make sure they can exit. That's usually Cypher's job. So... how did he get in and out of there all on his own? That makes no sense! And that fact was never acknowledged.

Aladdin

Aladdin told the genie that the final wish on the lamp would be to free him. He could have just used his final wish to free the genie and then given the lamp to Jasmine, right?
