This surrealist was hosted by Marie-Hélène de Rothschild, a French socialite who married into the esteemed Rothschild banking family. She wanted to throw the biggest party for the biggest people… So, she did.
Marie-Hélène de Rothschild
French socialite Marie-Hélène de Rothschild was born and raised in the richest part of New York City. She moved to Paris after school where she met her second and final husband, Guy de Rothschild. The couple had one child together and Marie had a child from her first marriage. The couple reopened Ferrières Château in France and lived there while throwing some of the most lavish parties to date. She continued to live her high profile life in France until she passed away in 1996 from severe illnesses. She was 68.Â
Ferrières Château
Marie made sure to show off her wealth through the Cheateu. She also designed it so that even the highest nobility would feel at home. All of the most famous people would find themselves at one of Marie’s lavish parties.Â1971 Surrealist Ball
Some of the worlds biggest socialites began receiving a bizarre letter in the mail. The letter was an invitation to what would be the biggest party of the century. Marie began to send out invitations to her ball. It was very mysterious as it was only readable when looking in a mirror…
Labyrinth
This party took a lot of planning in order to make it iconic. When guests first arrived, they were forced to go through a ‘labyrinth of hell’ to get into the main room. The labyrinth was creepy and scary! The footmen dressed were as creepy cats and had to help any lost guests make their way to the main room.
Once Inside…
The cat-men guided lost and confused guests through the labyrinth where they handed them off to Marie’s Husband, Guy. He was wearing a green hat that looked like a still-life on a platter! Already, the guests were walking into a bizarre world that their minds couldn’t imagine…
The Decorations Were Incredible
Marie, being as rich as she was, had no budget for the ball. So, she wanted to make it as crazy and creepy as she possibly could. She found tons of broken baby dolls to adorn the tables and even found spooky demons for decorations as well. Very fitting for the Illuminati…
Black Tie Look
On the invite, Marie asked her exclusive guests to show up in a very bizarre attire. She wanted them to be in black tie attire but with surrealist makeup and decorations. She wanted them to go all out!
Surrealist King
Of course, Salvador Dali was on the guest list. How could he not? This is literally up his alley. He was one of the most anticipated guests… Now that he was there, everyone knew this was a big deal. But, now people were wondering… Was he part of the illuminati, too? Wouldn’t be surprised!
Sweet Dessert
No, this is not a decoration. It’s actually the dessert for the guests! This is the dessert. This life-sized woman was made of sugar and presented on a bed a roses. Kinda creepy, but fun!
Mink Plates?
Marie was not one to have a boring party. She thought of everything, even the tableware. Her favorite table setting was the mink plate donned with wax lips.
Art Inspired Costumes
One of Marie’s guests had dressed up as Magritte’s famous self-portrait. Since surrealist art was popular at the time, this was very common for many of the guests. This also helped bring Marie’s bizarre vision to life…
The Hosts!
The hosts! Marie and her husband, Guy, had some pretty cool costumes as well. Marie had a cool Baphomet head that she wore at the beginning. She also had dazzling antlers that were otherworldly.
The Stunning Hostess
The hostess and her butlers for the night. She truly was the hostess with the mostest… Especially with those antlers!
Incredible Masks
Baron Alexis de Redé was a prominent and high-status banker, aristocrat, collector, and socialite. He was born in Switzerland and lived most of his life in France. He wore a now-iconic multiple-faced mask designed by Dalà himself!
Insane Menu Items
The menu was ‘pun-filled’ and had cannibalistic sounding meals, such as ‘cadavers’ and ‘Sir-Loin’. There was also an ‘extra-lucid soup’, which is referencing to lucid dreaming. They also had chevres hurlant de Tristesse, which translates to cheese of goat screaming in post-coital sadness. Pretty dark, but what else would the Illuminati like?
Famous Guests
Audrey Hepburn was one of Marie’s many American famous guests. She was photographed wearing a fancy bird cage costume and donning dazzling pearls and jewels!
Mona Lisa Lady and Eyeball Man
This was another very popular costume that is still being shared today. The woman on the right took inspiration from DaVinci’s famous Mona Lisa, replicating her iconic face over and over again all around the mask. The man on the left was donned with hundreds of golden globes. Definitely some of the most extravagent headpieces at the party!
Face-Changing Paint
These guests decided to take it upon themselves to go the extra mile with these crazy looks! Their face paint was so convincing, it was almost hard to tell who they were! It was like something straight out of a sci-fi movie!
Two-Head Mistress
You know how the old saying goes, “When you see it…” Have you noticed the second face yet? This is the “Nephilim Lady,” who is a mannequin over seven feet tall. Most of Marie’s guests went in for a photo-op with her!
An Odd Trio
This group really put in the effort to be extra crazy. The mime-looking man just randomly has a tiny chair on his head, and the scuba diver is just weird. But, because of these people, they made this party iconic!
Works of Art
Marie had created these centerpieces, and they are works of art in their own way!
The Mind of a Socialite
This ball has gone down in history as one of the most iconic and show-stopping parties of all time.
