The 2021 Kentucky Derby Winner Is...Medina Spirit!

It happened quickly, but it did definitely happen. The Kentucky Derby was this past Sunday and horse Medina Spirit was the one to take home the gold. Actually, it was Jockey John Velazquez who managed to carry home the trophy from the 147th Kentucky Derby race. The duo managed to overtake 19 other horses on the course. Even fan-favorite Essential Quality lost to Medina Spirit.

"I'm the luckiest guy in the world," said the horse's trainer, Bob Baffert, after the race. "That little horse has heart ... he won today, he doesn't know how much he costs but he was a little racehorse today." This win was the seventh for Bob, making him the record holder for most Kentucky Derby wins. It was also the fourth win in the race for Velazquez.

"There [are] no words to describe it," Velaquez commented after his remarkable victory. "What an incredible feeling man this doesn't get old. I want to come back next year again."

Chances are he will be! Of course, his racing career is not done for the season. The Kentucky Derby is the first leg on the American Triple Crown tour. Next up for the team will be Preakness Stakes on May 15, followed by the final run at the Belmont Stakes on June 5. Check it out and watch Medina Spirit possibly take home another award!
