The City of Philadelphia Is Giving Away Free Trees

Who doesn't want more trees? The city of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania has some greenspaces but has come under fire in the past for the lack of trees lining the streets. Well, TreePhilly is dedicated to fixing that issue. The organization will be donating tree starters to anyone who thinks they can take care of the massive organism. Beginning at two no-contact pickup events, certain groups might be eligible for door-to-door delivery.

People who want their tree will have to register on the TreePhilly website by May 17th. The pickups will be held during the day on Saturday, May 23, and Sunday, May 24. Those who selected delivery will not receive their trees until a few days later. The trees are only available while supplies last, and the organization is not giving away 1000 like they have in the past few years.

This year, only 200 lucky trees will find their new homes. The directors of TreePhilly are deeply worried about the impact of COVID-19 and have decided to err on the side of caution. Nevertheless, TreePhilly has also asked the city of Philadelphia to provide some new trees, but the city has not yet responded. They emphasize that workers and participants should show "strict adherence to social distancing guidelines."

"We are thrilled to be able to offer Philadelphia residents a safe opportunity to make a difference this spring, literally right in their own backyard," said Parks and Recreation Commissioner Kathryn Ott Lovell. The city of brotherly love is bent on making their home a beautiful one, even when it feels like they cannot.
