They were able to find the supposed manhole that is one of the many entrances around Manchester. Gallagher and his group of friends gathered around the entrance… All of them were a bit hesitant to go down (seriously, who wouldn’t be?)

It Smells Awfully like Death
They knew that this wasn’t going to smell great since it is an underground tunnel system, but it really smelt bad. They were all forced to cover their noses… What died down here?
Extreme Darkness
They were immersed in complete darkness. They were only guided by the light of their flashlights. Since they couldn’t see, it was hard to tell if they were alone or not… And that is dangerous.
Tunnels on Tunnels
They started to really explore, going down dark hallways and into the musty rooms. It was obvious that this place was heavily used, but why? It was like a maze in there…
Unexplainable Scream
It didn’t take long for them to get scared… Not even ten minutes since they entered, they heard a huge bang and a deafening scream. All of the guys were shaken up but continued to push through the tunnels…
Finding the Weirdest Things
They continued to explore and found some pretty incredible things! The weirdest object that they found was a locked safe… Since it was locked they wouldn’t be able to find out what was inside… Why would a safe be down here?
Tons of Bathrooms
Gallagher even found a row of toilets and urinals… That was extremely bizarre! Did this use to be open to the public, or was it used for something else?
Listening Closely
Throughout their exploration, they continued to hear bizarre bumps and noises. Instead of continuing, they decided to hang back and just listen…

They knew that they could hear water dripping and cars driving over them, but there were still some unexplainable noises…

Since they were scared out of their minds, it was hard to navigate the tunnel system. They rounded random corners and went down tons of hallways before finally finding their way back…
Back to the Surface
All of the guys clambered back up to the surface and sealed the manhole once again. They were all shaken to their core, and that’s when they realized what they were underneath…

The Famous Victoria Arches
Apparently, the underground city is actually called Victoria Arches. They were built all the way back in 1838… But, what for?
Bizarre History
In the mid-1850s, the city was mainly used for storage. Iron and copper workers would keep their materials underground since it was way safer. They also had exclusive access to the tunnels, which made it easier for them to work. Alcohols and wines were also kept safe down there! It wasn’t long until the purpose of this place was drastically changed…
Bunker for War
During World War II, this underground city was used to shelter in place. In a huge city like Manchester, it was hard to find spots to shelter in place… It wasn’t like everyone had access to bomb shelters. So, this already existing structure was used to protect the citizens of Manchester.
How Many People Can It Hold?
When it was first built, it had a capacity of over 1500 people at a time. That’s pretty convenient for a bomb shelter, don’t you think?
In the 60s
After the war was over and the use for bomb shelters diminished, the city decided to use this space to their advantage. In the 1960s, they opened up the underground space for a public bathroom! So, that’s why where were so many toilets…
Sealing It Up
After a while, the city began to seal it up. It became a problem and a lot of different crimes took place in these tunnels… So, over time, they closed most of the known entrances. Obviously, there are still secret ones, like the ones that Gallagher and his friends found…
Haunted Tunnels…
Many people like to believe that it’s haunted. Obviously, there’s no way to tell, and most paranormal investigators are remiss to go down there… Someone should investigate!
